Under OPEC’s charter, the cartel’s president has to be the oil minister of his country.
In an interview with Dow Jones Purnomo said, “[I don’t] know yet whether [I] will remain as OPEC’s president. [I] really don’t know yet, whether there will be a new cabinet, a new system.”
“Yes, the President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries has to be an oil minister from his country [but] OPEC secretary- general’s appointment is separate from the presidency,” he added. Purnomo is also OPEC’s Secretary-General.
